School Curling Program

The Powell River Curling Club wishes to extend an invitation to your school to participate in the School Curling Program held at our facility. This program is designed for students from Grades 5 to 12, and lessons can be scheduled from mid-October through to the end of February.

Curling is a non-contact sport, with a strong focus on sportsmanship and teamwork. Success in curling depends upon cooperation on the ice, game strategy and often a bit of luck, rather than on physical size or natural athletic ability.

Curling is commonly played simply as a social and recreational game, but for many it can become a very competitive game with its best athletes competing for medals at the World Curling Championships and Winter Olympics.

Curling is part of Sport BC’s championship sport program which offers high school students the opportunity to compete in inter-school competitions, bonspiels and Provincial High School Championships for both boys and girls. Our program can help students to identify their interest in curling.

The 4 pillars of our program are:

  • To introduce the sport of curling through the existing Physical Education Program (a sport that they might otherwise not have the opportunity to try out on their own)

  • To assist in the development of the students’ physical and social skills

  • To encourage sportsmanship and teamwork

  • To enable students to participate in a lifelong sport

All our main curling instructors are National Coaching Certification Program trained, with volunteer club members and parents as helpers. Teachers are strongly encouraged to take part in the lessons with their students.

We hope you will consider encouraging your schools to include the sport of curling as part of their extra-curricular physical education programs, along with other activities currently offered.

The program we use requires a minimum of 4 lessons. Some teachers and schools like to have their students take part in up to 6 weeks total, so they have a chance to enjoy game situations after they have learned the necessary skills.

Please call for costs per student per visit to the curling club – the money received is put back into the Junior Curling Program for equipment purchases and instruction.
